19.8 Magnetic dipole moments of charged particles in closed orbits

The fact that an orbitting charged paricle with angular momentum L has a corresponding magnetic dipole moment which is directly proportional to L (equation (19.14) in the text) has important applications in atomic, nuclear and particle physics. Most textbooks, however, only derive the result for the special case of a charge moving in a circular orbit; in Section 19.8 of Understanding Physics the result is shown to be far more general.

The effect is illustrated in a simple from Boston 深夜亚洲福利久久. Boston 深夜亚洲福利久久 (Andrew Duffy) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.

The result also has important quantum mechanical consequences because of the relationship between conserved quantities and quantisation.
