3.1 The concept of force

 

Students should be aware that the approach to the concept of force described in this Chapter is not the only methodology that may be employed. Indeed scientists and educators have often engaged in controversial debate on the issue. At this point, however, it is sufficient to be aware that the approach undertaken consistently in this book is what some philosophers have called 'empirical' (derived from or guided by experience or experiment) but that alternative conceptual frameworks are possible.

Many books and articles have been written on the subject (for example, a number of books written by Max Jammer on the Concepts of Force and the Concepts of Mass). Readers with an interest in the philosophy of science may wish to read more on the subject but you are advised to delay doing so until you have developed a good understanding of dynamics.
