15.1 Electric currents

This chapter begins the study of a completely new set of physical phenomena (electromagnetism) which will be the subject of the next seven chapters of Understanding Physics. As was the case with the topics treated in earlier chapters, the the discussion begins at a very basic level, in this case developing formal ways of understanding what happens when constant elecric currents flow in conducting materials.

The heating effect of an electric current can be investigated using the simulation on from the Davidson Virtual Chemistry Expriments. Subsequent sections (for example, ) may also prove useful as you study this chapter of Understanding Physics.

Halliday, Resnick and Walker: Principles of Physics, 9th Edition, J Wiley & Sons, 2011 The force effect and magnetic effect are described in the simulation from the Halliday Resnick and Walker Student Companion Site. You need not concern yourself with quantitative issues such as field strength at this stage.
