Chapter 20 Electromagnetic induction: time-varying emfs

The force on a moving charge in a magnetic field, discussed in the previous chapter, is used here to derive Faraday鈥檚 law of electromagnetic induction.  The quantity self-inductance is defined and the role played by an inductor in an electric circuit also comprising resistors and/or capacitors is discussed.  The response of the components in a circuit involving inductors to an applied time-varying emf is considered which leads to the idea of a transformer and the concept of mutual inductance.

The remaining sections of the chapter are given over to a treatment of alternating current (a.c.) sources and the behaviour of resistors, capacitors and inductors in a.c. circuits and networks.
