24.2 The spectrum of hydrogen: the Rydberg formula
The hydrogen spectrum in the visible wavelength range (the Balmer spectrum) may be built up by choosing the 'Experiment' option and by ticking the Show spectrometer checkbox in the PhET simulation . Note that several minutes are needed for the visible spectrum to accumulate.

The study of the emission spectra which result from transitions between atomic energy levels (spectroscopy) is mentioned only briefly at the beginning of Section 24.2 of Understanding Physics but, if you are interested in investigating the topic further, you could look at the ActivPhysics OnLine interactive exercise .
The PhET simulation also provides interactive exercises in spectroscopy although the spectra of elements other than hydrogen may be better appreciated after multielectron atoms have been discussed (Section 20.14).
