Chapter 17 Electric fields in materials

This chapter begins with a discussion on how, first, conductors and then insulator respond to the application of an electric field.  In treating the latter case the concepts of polarisation, susceptibility and permittivity are introduced. The phenomena of ferroelectricity and paraelectricity are explained; particular emphasis is placed on the bar electret because of the correspondence with the bar magnet which plays an important role in later chapters.

A short treatment of electric polarisation from a microscopic perspective is followed by six sections covering various aspects of capacitors.
