21.2 Plane electromagnetic waves

Illustrations of a propogating plane electromagnetic wave are given in the Halliday, Resnick and Walker concept simulation and in the by Walter Fendt. Wikipedia image
Wikipedia image The equations (21.5) and (21.6) derived in this section represent the differential form of Maxwell's equations for the special case of a plane wave propagating in the z-direction. A complete three-dimensional treatment probably requires a slightly deeeper knowledge of vector calculus than is assumed in Understanding Physics. Interested students will find the differential form of Maxwell's equations for magnetic and/or polarizable media on the hyperphysics website and discussed in Section 21.11 of this website.
