The PhET simulation allows the study of wave patterns (1) due to a single source and (2) due to two identical sources vibrating in phase. Three examples of wave motions are presented (Water waves, Sound waves and Light waves) each selectable by the user by clicking on the relevant tab. Slide bars enable the Amplitude and the Frequency to be changed by the user. Other features include (i) a facility to display a graph of intensity as a function of position along any line in the direction of propagation of the wave and (ii), in the case of light waves, a facility to plot the light intensity on a screen set up at right angles to the the direction of propagation of the wave. The features which allows the introduction of a barrier such as a wall/mirror or one or two slits should not be invoked until Section 12.7. |
