14.18 The simple harmonic oscillator

The PhET interactive simulation can be used to invesigate the quantum harmonic oascillator. Again confine yourself to the One Well tab and Select Harmonic oscillator for the Potential Well on the top right.

As before (Section 14.17) you can vary the mass of the particle confined in the well and you may display either the Probability Density or the Wave Function (real part, imaginary part, magnitude, phase).

The quantum harmonic oscillator is also available in Paul Falstad's interactive exercise . In this case select Set-up: Harmonic oscillator and Mouse = Set Eigenstate, as before (Section 14.15); you can change the Particle Mass and the Spring Constant and observe how each eigenstate responds.

Note that, as indicated in the Applet description, Paul Falstad's interactive exercises allow the investigation of linear combinations of eigenstates — an important issue in more advanced quantum mechanics courses.
