20.6 Time-varying emfs: mutual inductance: transformers

The Molecular Expressions interactive tutorial on the  may help to you give some experience of this device. Note, however, as explained in Understanding Physics, transformers can also be used to change any time-varying emf, not just sinusoidal voltages (a.c.).

To observe the modification of a non-sinusoidal voltage by a transformer, run the PhET simulation and click on the Transformer tab. Choose the d.c. source and a meter as the potential difference indicator across the resistor in the pickup coil circuit. Note the behaviour of the meter reading as you switch the d.c. voltage quickly.

Also note how the meter needle responds as you move one coil relative to the other using the mouse, that is, as you change the mutual inductance.

Alternating current transformers are covered in Section 20.8 of Understanding Physics.

The YouTube video shows some practical uses transformers.
