Chapter 19 Electric currents and moving charges in magnetic fields

This chapter starts by considering the forces between electric currents and magnets and, in particular, the important case of a plane current loop in a magnetic field and its associated magnetic dipole moment. The magnetic field strength at a point due to a nearby moving electric charge is studied as is the related force on a charge moving in a magnetic field.

The second part of the chapter considers the polarisation of magnetic materials and discusses the phenomena of magnetisation, magnetic susceptibility, paramagnetism, diamagnetism and ferromagnetism.  The analogy between most of these concepts and the corresponding concepts in electric materials is highlighted.

The chapter concludes with a short discussion on moving coil meters and electric motors.
