10.14 Microscopic models of condensed matter systems
| The PhET interactive simulation on provides a good simple introduction to the ideas introduced in Section 10.14 of Understanding Physics. At this stage, when using the simulation, do not add or remove heat and do not click the Phase Changes tab (all this can wait until you study Chapter 11). Under the Solid, Liquid, Gas tab, experiment with all three states of matter for the four materials available. The Interaction Potential allows you to observe the forces between pairs of atoms in three cases, namely (i) neon, (ii) argon and (iii) an interatomic potential for which you can select the parameters yourself. In each case, by moving the blue circle along the potenial energy curve using the mouse, you can release the atom and observe its subsequent motion under the interactive force. |
