Chapter 5 Force fields

In this chapter the concept of a field of force is introduced for the first time.  The gravitational field is presented as an example of a force field and Newton's law of universal gravitation is introduced.  Physical quantities defined in the context of force fields have important general applications and other examples will arise in subsequent chapters (electric fields, magnetic fields, etc). The concepts of potential energy at a point in a field and of the angular momentum of a particle play an important role in the dynamics of fields.
