Note that the description given in Section 24.9 of Understanding Physics considers only the special case (known as the normal Zeeman effect) in which the total intrinsic spin angular momentum of the electrons (introduced in the Section 24.10) is zero. Towards the end of his lecture Prof Appelbaum discusses the anomalous Zeeman effect. Its explanation is beyond the scope of Understanding Physics.
