20.9 Resistance, capacitance and inductance in a.c. circuits

To gain some experience with the material in this section, any electric circuit construction package that provides an a.c. power supply may be used; for example, the PhET .

First set up the simple circuit comprising just an a.c. power supply connected across a resistance (Figure 17.6 in Understanding Physics). Connect a voltage chart across the terminals of the power supply and connect a current chart at any point in the circuit. Satisfy yourself that the current is in phase with the voltage.

Now replace the resistor first with a capacitor and then with an inductor and, in each case, determine the phase difference between the current and the voltage. Investigate the effect, if any, of changing the frequency of the a.c. source
