Chapter 7 Rigid-body dynamics

Previous chapters deal exclusively with the dynamics of systems of point particles or of extended bodies that can, for the purposes of analysis, be treated as point particles.  Chapter 7 considers the dynamics of rigid bodies - that is, bodies in which the distance between each pair of particle making up the body remains constant. In general, the dynamics of a rigid body comprises rotational as well as translational motion. Despite the complexity of such systems, it turns out that, when the axis of rotation is fixed, there is a direct correspondence between the formalism describing rotational motion and that developed for translational motion in previous chapters, leading to simple analyis of such systems.  The final section of the chapter presents an approach to dealing with situations where the rotation axis is not fixed.
