15.9 Comparison of emfs: the potentiometer


 

 

Figure 15.21 of Understanding Physics (reproduced on the left) illustrates a very simple example of a slide-wire potentiomenter commonly used in undergraduate laboratories to show how the emf of a power supply may be measured (see, for example, this  where a slightly different arrangement based on the same principle is described).

While very different methods of determining emfs are now available, various typers of slide-wire potentiomenters were very important historically, see from the Instruments for Natural Philosophy collection of Professor Thomas B. Greenslade, Kenyon College, Ohio.
