13.9 The Doppler effect

The simulation associated with the textbook Astromomy by John D Fix allows you to change the speed and direction of both the source and the observer. The source frequency is fixed and the wave pattern seen by the observer is shown in the box on the lower left of the screen, enabling you to see the frequency shifts.

It may be advisable to read the Instructions (click the How to tab) carefully before you begin to use this simulation.
You should also attempt all of the Exercises suggested; Solutions are supplied.

Supersonic speed

If a source of sound is travelling through a medium (such as air) faster than the speed of sound in the medium, a somewhat different situation arises. Since the source is moving faster than the sound waves it is emitting, it actually leads the advancing wavefront. The sound source will pass by a stationary observer before the observer actually hears the sound it creates. As can be seen from the figures below, this leads to a shock front, similar to the bow wave generated by a fast moving boat in water.
