7.5 Measurement of torque: the torsion balance

 

The invention of the torsion balance, also called torsion pendulum, is usually credited to who invented it in 1777 but it appears to have been invented independently by sometime before 1783. It was used by in 1798 in to measure the gravitational force between two masses and thereby to calculate the density of the Earth. In more modern terms, the same experiment effectively determines a value for the gravitational constant (G).
