16.13 Acceleration of charged particles

Halliday, Resnick and Walker: Principles of Physics, 9th Edition, J Wiley & Sons, 2011 Run the Halliday, Resnick and Walker concept simulation but keep the magnetic field set to zero. In this simulation the electric field strength is always constant in the ±y-direction but its magnitude may be changed between + 4 and – 4 V m–1. Observe the effect of changing the magnitude and sign of the charge, its mass and the x- and y-components of the initial velocity.

The  Java Applet from MagLab shows how a beam of charged particles is deflected when passing through a uniform electric field. This is the basis of instruments like the cathode ray oscilloscope and older type of display units like TV tubes.

The Rich Media Scene from the website by the Science Museum, London gives a wonderful description of the Cockcroft-Walton experiment and related contemporary particle accelerators.
