27.3 Nuclear models

Nuclear models are discussed and compared in  of the Wikipedia entry on the .

The liquid drop model is described in more detail in the hyperphysics and in the Wikipedia

The Fermi gas and shell models are described in more detail in (hyperphysics)

Using the KCVS applet , nuclear binding energies can be estimated using the semi-empirical mass formula. A comparison can be made of the effects of the strong nuclear and electrostatic forces as well as the effect of asymmetry in nuclei. Decay processes may also be identified but this exercise should be left until Section 27.5 has been studied.

KCVS applet illustrates the forces involved in the binding of nucleons. A pair of protons are brought together and the resulting potential energy is displayed graphically.

The collective model is discussed briefly in the Section from the BERKELEY LAB website.
